On Tuesday, August 11th, another audio recording involving Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Avila was revealed, in which she was told that it was her “last chance” to prevent the U.S. government from presenting evidence against her is to sign a “proffer letter.”
The audio reportedly features the voice of her attorney, Michael Nadler, as well as the intermediaries who appeared in previous recordings.
A proffer letter is a written agreement between a U.S. federal prosecutor and a person under investigation or a witness—in this case, Marina del Pilar.
Under the agreement, the governor would commit to providing information regarding a crime or crimes, with the guarantee that her statement would not be used directly to incriminate her at trial.
Signing this document does not absolve Marina del Pilar of guilt, nor does it automatically make her an official government informant; it is merely the first step toward negotiating potential cooperation.
And what about the defense of sovereignty that members of the Morena party emphasize so strongly?
It seems Marina del Pilar is now adopting a “save yourself” approach.
The audio was presented on Tuesday by journalist Gildo Garza on the Radio Fórmula program hosted by fellow journalist Azucena Uresti.
