Norma Meza Calles, a community representative, told the EFE news agency that “it’s very sad that they’re destroying” the hill.
She explained that the site is used for traditional practices.
This hill is located on the border between two countries: Mexico on one side and the United States on the other.
Community members assert that the U.S. work to build the wall includes blasting with explosives to clear a path, which occurred last week.
The mayor of Tecate, Román Cota Muñoz, confirmed that the work is taking place on U.S. territory, so Mexican authorities can do little to stop the destruction of the hill.
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum even stated that she requested a report from the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs regarding the potential repercussions of the use of explosives at the site, but so far there is no confirmed damage on Mexican territory.
