Operation Clean-up, driven by Mexico’s Ministry of Economy, has carried out its fourth operation in Ensenada, Baja California, where more than 3 million items of illicit origin have been confiscated.
This seizure is considered the largest in the country’s history in relation to unauthorized merchandise, with an estimated value of 320 million pesos. During a press conference, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, underlined the magnitude of the seizure and its importance in the fight against piracy and smuggling.
The operation was carried out in two shopping centers that covered a total area of 18,000 square meters and included the participation of federal and state authorities. The governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar, provided details on the types of products seized, which include perfumes, toys, electronics and textiles. In her statements, Ebrard emphasized that this operation is part of a broader effort to combat smuggling at the national level.
Since the start of Operation Clean-Up in November, three previous operations have been carried out in different locations: 262,334 items were seized in Mexico City; one million items in Hermosillo, Sonora; and more than 35,000 items in Saltillo, Coahuila. In total, the operations have resulted in the seizure of merchandise worth approximately 500 million pesos.
