Baja California Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade Ramírez has confirmed that the bodies recovered from a 50-foot-deep well on Friday belong to the missing surfers. The victims have been identified as brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and Jack Carter Rhoad from San Diego. Initially, the bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition, prompting the need for DNA testing to confirm their identities. However, this step is now unnecessary, as the families of the victims have positively identified their loved ones.
The tragic incident appears to be the result of a robbery. The three men reportedly resisted giving up their truck, leading to their fatal shooting and subsequent disposal in the well. Investigators believe that the assailants encountered the surfers while they were camping near La Bocana, a well-known surfing spot south of Ensenada, near the community of Santo Tomas. The remote location, lacking cell service and witnesses, likely contributed to the criminals’ perception that it was an ideal opportunity for robbery.
As of now, two men and a woman are in custody, while two others remain under investigation according to Baja’s attorney general. This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers faced by travelers and the importance of safety awareness, even in seemingly isolated areas.
