Authorities in Baja California launched a search operation after a man opened fire on Mexicali Municipal Police officers during an intervention early Sunday morning. The suspect escaped, and the vehicle he allegedly used was found abandoned hours later.
According to official reports, the incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on the highway to Tijuana when municipal officers signaled a driver to stop for a routine check.
The intervention resulted in an armed attack against the officers, who were fired upon by the driver. No police officers or civilians were injured during the incident, according to information released by authorities.
Following the attack, a search operation was activated in various locations throughout Mexicali, with the participation of personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office, the State Investigation Agency, the State Citizen Security Force, the National Defense Secretariat, and the National Guard.
Law enforcement agencies deployed search teams to locate the perpetrator, who was described as a man wearing gray jeans and a black shirt at the time of the incident.
As part of the search efforts, authorities located the vehicle allegedly involved in the attack. It is a gray Ford Focus, approximately a 2010 model, with license plate AVZ942A, which was found abandoned in a vacant lot in the Virreyes area.
The vehicle was impounded for further investigation and will be analyzed as part of the ongoing investigation following the attack on the municipal officers.
Despite the coordinated deployment of municipal, state, and federal forces, the driver had not been located by the end of the operation. Authorities continued their investigation to establish his identity and determine the circumstances surrounding the armed attack that occurred in the early morning hours in Mexicali.
The attack that occurred early Sunday morning adds to a series of recent incidents in which law enforcement officers have been targeted in Mexicali, prompting deployments of municipal, state, and federal forces.
Last April, a large-scale operation was launched in the Carranza neighborhood following an attack on a municipal police officer and a subsequent armed attack on a local police station. On that occasion, more than 20 units from various agencies participated to secure the area and investigate the incidents.
Weeks earlier, in March 2026, a municipal police officer was shot while heading home after finishing his shift. According to authorities, it was a targeted attack carried out by armed men who fired at the officer from another vehicle. The officer was wounded and taken to receive medical attention, while an operation was launched to locate those responsible.
