Bazaar owner reports threats over extortion in Mexicali: “We’re going to kill you and your son”

Over the weekend, Gabriela Ponce, owner of Gaby’s Bazaar in Mexicali, Baja California, reported receiving threats from a criminal organization.

The threats are believed to be related to extortion, as Gabriela mentions in a video shared on social media that she was threatened.

“They just came to threaten us. I’m very afraid for myself, for my family, for everyone around me…”

The employee explained that a man on a motorcycle delivered the threatening message, which she believes was linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

“A person arrived on a motorcycle wearing a helmet with this box, and inside it was a message that said the following: ‘Contact us, we’re going to burn down your businesses and kill you and your son. Sincerely, Jalisco Cartel, followed by a phone number,'” she said.

Gabriela said she is unwilling to pay, as the bazaar provides her with what she needs to live, and she also supports several people who work there.

“I can’t, I don’t have enough. I know they made it seem like there was plenty, but there isn’t. And well, that’s it, everything stays here. If they’re going to burn it down, so be it, that’s how it’s going to stay. Let it all burn, but I don’t have any money to give.”

“…I can’t take it anymore, there’s no way, there’s no way I’m going to pay, I don’t even want to know how much because I don’t have enough.”

She took the opportunity to appeal to the authorities and the online community to bring her case to light so that the authorities can help her.

“I beg you to help me so that the authorities come, so that everyone knows what’s going to happen to Gabi today. It’s another number in the red, another business that’s going to close because this can’t go on.”

Gabriela explains that this is not the first time she has been threatened, as something similar happened a few years ago.
