Joanna Eugenia Garay Machado, a councilwoman from the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) in the Rosarito Beach City Council, took credit for activities carried out by animal rights groups and erased Liz López, leader of the Rosarito Volunteer Group, from one of the photos.
The PVEM councilwoman posted on social media on Saturday, March 28, about a collection drive for dogs at the Animal Control Center.
“Thank you to everyone who joined the collection of leashes and bowls. Each one becomes a walk for them,” the councilwoman wrote alongside a series of photos from the event.
However, this and other activities were actually organized by citizens who even contributed their own money.
A statement regarding the matter was released at the same time. In both cases, both on social media and in the content shared with the media, a group photo was sent in which activist Liz López was removed.
In the area where the activist appears in the original photograph, which PUNTO NORTE obtained, a smudge can be seen, left by the digital application as a trace of when that part of the image was erased.
Not only that, but according to testimonies shared with PUNTO NORTE by other animal rights activists, the councilwoman has made the institutional support she provides them conditional.
In the case of the organization Voluntariado Rosarito, it has been active for a year and a half and has collaborated with the municipal government on projects such as the restoration of animal control areas, replacing small cages with appropriately sized ones for dogs that were in cramped spaces, which caused them stress.
They are also responsible for providing walks for these captive animals every two weeks, in addition to promoting responsible adoptions.
In the altered image, the activist’s sneakers are visible.
In collaboration with the Rosarito Beach City Council, animal rights activists have also participated in pet sterilization campaigns.
Councilwoman Joanna Eugenia Garay Machado arrived at the Rosarito City Council through proportional representation, representing the Citizen Movement Party. However, she is part of the group of politicians who have migrated from the “orange” party to the Green Party, following in the footsteps of real estate developer David Saul Guakil.
