Through social media, Ismael Burgueño, mayor of Tijuana, Baja California, announced a new SENTRI lane at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. According to the mayor, this lane will help alleviate traffic and improve mobility at one of the busiest border crossings in the world.
The San Ysidro Port of Entry, located between Tijuana and San Ysidro, is one of the most important and busiest border crossings in the world, as it is the land border crossing that directly connects Federal Highway 1 in Mexico with Interstate 5 in the U.S. It is estimated that thousands of vehicles and pedestrians cross daily, generating long wait times that can exceed two hours during peak hours.
When will the SENTRI lane open in Tijuana?
In the post, Burgueño highlighted that the new SENTRI crossing gate on Second Street in the city center will be operational starting the third week of November.
According to the governor, the purpose of this new vehicular alternative is to alleviate traffic congestion in areas like the Zona Río district and more efficiently direct drivers who already have SENTRI access, expediting crossings for thousands of daily users and directly benefiting the local economy.
Thousands of people use this route daily, both by vehicle and on foot; it is also crucial for commerce, the daily transit of people, border workers, tourism, and other cross-border activities. The constant flow of visitors and residents who live a binational lifestyle requires modern infrastructure that meets current demand.
Finally, the governor emphasized that this project reorganizes access; Second Street will be for exclusive SENTRI use, joining Padre Kino. Authorities indicated that this measure is part of a comprehensive border mobility plan that could include further improvements in the future.
