With more than 550 attendees and 61 teams from 14 Mexican states, Baja California marked a milestone by holding the WRO Baja California 2025 Robotics Olympiad for the first time, positioning the state as a national benchmark in promoting STEAM education.

The teams were divided into three categories:

  • Starter Kids UARO (preschool): 17 teams
  • Starter Kids Aikiro (lower elementary): 25 teams
  • Future Engineers: 19 teams

The participating states, in alphabetical order, were: Baja California (host), Coahuila, Colima, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Veracruz, and Zacatecas.

A Historic Event at the International Level

For the first time in the world, Mexico became the pioneering country in promoting the Starter Kids UARO and Starter Kids Aikiro categories, allowing preschool and elementary school children to participate in the competition. This was possible thanks to the work of educational institutions such as Geeks Academy and Grupo Ferdel, as well as the support of strategic allies such as the Ministry of Economy, Grupo Educativo 16 de Septiembre, and sponsors such as Mattilda, Vanjupe, and Universidad Cenyca.

Likewise, the IPRC categories of the Korean brand RoboRobo, promoted as official sponsors of the WRO internationally, were piloted for the first time in Baja California, strengthening Mexico’s ties to the global educational robotics ecosystem.

Opening Messages

At the opening ceremony, Baja California’s Secretary of Economy, Kurt Honold, highlighted the importance of supporting more events like the WRO Baja California and of supporting the development of talent from an early age, underscoring the value of innovation and technology in the development of future generations.

For his part, Gustavo Fernández De León, CEO of Grupo Ferdel, in his welcoming speech, thanked the State Government, through the Ministry of Economy, for its support and issued a call to action to continue promoting technological education as a driver of development for the region and the country.

Geeks Academy expresses its gratitude

In the words of the organizers, this event marks a turning point in the history of robotics in Mexico:

“At Geeks Academy, we are deeply grateful to all the institutions, partners, and families that made this first edition of the WRO Baja California possible. Bringing together more than 550 attendees and paving the way for the youngest members of the robotics world to have a place in the world fills us with pride and commitment to continue fostering the talent of our children and youth.”

This is what Paulina Bermúde Zamudio, director of Geeks Academy, emphasized.

Next Steps

With an eye to the future, the winners from Querétaro will represent Mexico in the WRO international final in Singapore. Institutions such as Geeks Academy, Garage Hub, and CETYS Universidad Campus Mexicali will represent us as the Mexican delegation at the Open Championship America in Panama in the Future Innovators categories.

Likewise, Geeks Academy and Grupo Ferdel announced that Baja California will continue the Robotics Olympiad, working on an even more robust next edition, with the goal of adding more institutions, companies, and strategic partners to promote STEAM education and strengthen Mexico’s leadership in international competitions.

With this historic first edition, Baja California not only opens the doors to the future of technological education, but also places Mexico on the international map as an innovative country that fosters talent from childhood.
