A popular seafood restaurant in Mexicali was attacked with a Molotov cocktail early Friday morning, leaving no one injured but sparking a police investigation and raising concerns about extortion and gang activity.
The attack on Panchitos Restaurant, located on Argentina Avenue in the Alamitos neighborhood, was carried out at around 6:00 am when the establishment was empty. Authorities quickly responded to the scene and arrested four individuals who were later identified as Freddy ‘N’, 38; Alejandro ‘N’, 42; Francisco Javier ‘N’, 52; and Julián Antonio ‘N’, 28.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers fled the scene in a Nissan Versa after throwing the Molotov cocktail, which only damaged the entrance door. The Municipal Police, with the support of surveillance cameras, were able to track down the vehicle and apprehend the suspects.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but unconfirmed reports suggest that Panchitos Restaurant may have been targeted by extortionists who demanded a “floor fee” from local businesses. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed.
In response to the incident, the restaurant released a statement claiming that it was simply a minor electrical issue and that they would reopen their branch as usual. The business also expressed gratitude to the Heroic Mexicali Fire Department and the Municipal Police for their swift response and professionalism in handling the situation.
The attack has raised concerns about gang activity and extortion in Mexicali, particularly given recent reports of arrests related to these issues. However, it remains unclear whether this incident is directly linked to any ongoing investigations or if it was an isolated event.
The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported the arrest of two alleged members of a gang dedicated to extorting businesses in Mexicali just last weekend. While it has not been determined whether the recent attack on Panchitos Restaurant is related to this incident, authorities are working to investigate the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
As for the restaurant, they have assured their customers that they will reopen as usual, starting at 12:00 pm on the same day. The business expressed appreciation for the support of their patrons and vowed to continue serving the community with the same level of quality and service that has made them a popular destination in Mexicali.
