The world’s top big-wave surfers are abuzz as three of North America’s most iconic spots – Waimea Bay, Maverick’s, and Jaws – get ready for a swell of a lifetime. But the spotlight is shifting south, where Todos Santos, a small island off Mexico’s Ensenada coast, is set to become the next big-wave hotspot.
According to Thriller At Killers founder Gary Linden, who won’t be in the water himself due to hip surgery, December 22 and 24 are expected to bring massive waves to the region. “The first big bump on December 22 peaks at 15 feet at 16 seconds, but it will likely be a bit windy,” Linden reports.
However, the 24th looks more promising, with swell peaking early morning till mid-day at 16 feet at 19 seconds. “Those are big numbers!” Linden exclaims. “Light winds and moderate tides make for ideal conditions on both days.”
Despite the Thriller At Killers contest being postponed, big-wave enthusiasts can still stack some clips for next year’s competition. This means sneaking in some high-risk maneuvers while avoiding heavy Latin chargers.
A star-studded lineup is already making its way to Todos Santos, including Andres Flores from the Dominican Republic and top Puerto Rican surfers Marcial, Coco, and Quetzal.
As the Pacific unleashes its fury over the next 72-96 hours, remember to stay within your limits, respect fellow surfers, and prioritize a safe return to shore when the ride is over. The big-wave season has officially begun, and Todos Santos is ready to pump.
