The criminal alliance behind the Ensenada massacre

Last week the State Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the arrest of three people, who are presumed to be related to the massacre of the rally in San Vicente

On May 20, 10 people were killed and another 9 were injured in an attack registered in San Vicente, municipality of Ensenada, Baja California, where a rally event called “El cachanillazo” was taking place since morning in Playa Hermosa along with several drivers who are fond of off-road racing, one of the tourist attractions of Ensenada.

Two weeks after this massacre in San Vicente, according to a Zeta investigation, the events were unleashed by a settling of scores between the Sinaloa and Arellano Félix cartels, according to data that a criminal alliance between these two is known. Sinaloan groups, that of the Arzate brothers, Aquiles and René, who control the coastal zone of Baja California, and that of “Los Rusos”, which operates in Mexicali and its Valley.

The criminal alliance between these groups was to confront a third group of organized crime, headed by Pablo Edwin Huerta Nuño, alias “El Flaquito” of the Arellano Félix family and who allegedly stole a drug shipment from the Sinaloa cartel.

Until now, the most solid hypothesis on the part of the State Prosecutor’s Office is that the attack in San Vicente was organized by two factions of operators of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García. They refer to the alliance between the Arzate brothers, who would have joined Alexander Sánchez, alias Ángel Gaxiola and his group identified as “Los Rusos”, even though the brothers do not enjoy the shelter of “El Mayo”.

According to the researcher, what these criminal organizations are looking for is to seize control of Baja California; however, the investigation reveals that the cell that combines both groups identified as “Los Zorros”, headed by Christian Alexis Mendoza Guillén “El Plaga” and/or “El Morrillo”, a criminal who operated at the service of the Arzates between 2017 and 2020 in Tijuana and San Quintín, he reappeared in Mexicali in 2020, to be arrested for attempted murder as the ringleader of “Los Rusos” in 2022.

The point of criminal convergence would have been, one of the investigators expanded, to confront the Arellano Félix cell, headed by “El Flaquito”, represented in Ensenada by Leopoldo Lizárraga Ochoa “El Pantera” and as the alleged criminal bosses of Alonso Arámbula Piña “El Trébol”, who was one of the victims in the San Vicente massacre.

“The Trebol”

During the “El cachanillazo” rally, the Razer-type vehicles began their race on Hermosa beach in the port of Ensenada in route to the municipalities of San Quintin, San Felipe on the Sea of Cortés, Mexicali and Tecate in the mountainous area of Baja California. , upon reaching the town of San Vicente, a point was set to provide gasoline. When the competitors were stocking up, they were attacked by armed men.

Thus, the massacre took place on the side of the Transpeninsular highway, near the town of San Vicente, about 100 kilometers south of Ensenada, and according to the first investigations, the target was Alonso Arámbula Piña, alias “El Trébol,” investigated in the United States for drug trafficking.

Another of the victims in this massacre, which according to police sources was a confrontation between leaders of antagonistic criminal groups; Arellano Félix cartel and Sinaloa cartel, is the delegate in San Antonio de las Minas, in the Ensenada wine region, José Eduardo Orozco Piña.

“El Trébol” was accused of being part of the Arellano Félix cartel who are currently in dispute with the Jalisco Nuevo Generación cartel and the Sinaloa cartel.

Within the state of Baja California there are 4 criminal groups that are in dispute over the territory, the 4 protagonists are the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, the Sinaloa cartel which is led by Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and “Los Chapitos “The Beltrán Leyva, the Arellano Félix cartel and the Tijuana cartel in Baja California are also in the state.

Among the illegal activities carried out by these groups are drug trafficking, human trafficking, robbery, hydrocarbon theft and extortion.

According to state authorities, the episode of violence that took place in San Vicente is the result of the territorial dispute between these criminal groups.

“They are criminal groups that have a presence and roots in other municipalities. We believe that the struggle derives from rivalry and other criminal activities of a similar nature in the municipality of Tijuana and the state of Sinaloa, with some limits from other states in the northwestern region of the country related to drug trafficking,” said the Baja California state prosecutor.

It has also been declared that the state authorities have increased the investigation and search work where only from January to April of the current year, 415 kilograms of fentanyl have been seized, which has exceeded what was seized in all of 2022.
