Amid the upturn in Covid-19 infections in Mexico, a caravan of around 700 vehicles with migrants from the U.S. at the Laredo, Texas crossing entered the country, who returned to Mexico to reunite with their families for the holidays

The National Migration Institute (INM) reported that the cars and trucks entered Mexico around 7:00 in the morning, passing through Tamaulipas, Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Hidalgo until they reached the municipality of Jalpan Serra in Queretaro.

The caravan lasted approximately 10 hours and was coordinated by 39 federal agencies, state and municipal authorities, according to information released by the INM.

Although Mexico is currently facing a rebound in Covid-19 cases, thousands of migrants have returned to the country to spend Christmas and the New Year with their families.

The organizers of the caravan requested in advance, the support of the Government of Mexico to provide within the framework of the “Winter Operation 2020” of the “Paisano del INM” program, accompaniment during their entry and transit through the country.

Segismundo Doguín mentioned that small caravans leave the CITEV module daily with between 50 and 60 vehicles to be escorted along Boulevard Colosio, up to kilometer 26 of the National Highway.

“They are taking out the ones with blocks of 50-60 vehicles apparently, but it is coming out continuously as of today I think the flow will start to increase considerably.”
