Oaxaca wins in the World Travel Awards 2020

Oaxaca was recognized by the “Oscars” of world tourism in the category Leading Urban Getaway Destination in Mexico and Central America.

The City of Oaxaca was awarded as the best Leading Urban Getaway Destination in Mexico and Central America (Mexico & Central America’s Leading City Break Destination 2020), in the World Travel Awards 2020, considered as the “Oscars” of the world tourism industry.

For the second time this year, the city of Oaxaca was crowned with one of the main awards that
distinguish tourist places and this time it won first place in the category of Leading Urban Getaway Destination in Mexico and Central America 2020 in the World Travel Awards (WTA) , an award known as “the Oscar of the World Cup”

Despite the pandemic, Oaxaca retains first place in the list of best destinations to travel in 2020, according to the Viajala Barometer or the most popular flight and hotel metasearch engine among users; a same position he held last year

A few months ago, last July, the state capital was also recognized as “the best tourist city in the
world”, a title awarded by readers of the specialized travel magazine Travel + Leisure, and was
chosen among 25 cities around the world.

In this regard, the state governor, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, declared that in Oaxaca work is being done to build the necessary conditions to receive tourism, since this activity represents a source of employment for Oaxacan families that are dedicated to artisan production, to the provision of lodging, food and transportation services.

In this sense, he asserted that in the four years of his government, actions have been aimed at increasing and strengthening this activity, efforts that have allowed, he said, that Oaxaca is considered within the ranking of the safest entities in the country, thus generating trust in visitors.

Likewise, a series of works have been carried out with the aim of increasing air and land connectivity; as well as improving the infrastructure that allows visitors to enjoy the architectural heritage with which the Historic Center of the city, and the art, gastronomy, nature reserves and beach destinations in the eight regions of Oaxaca.

The vote for this award was cast by professionals in the travel industry and by the general public last September; It should be noted that Oaxaca was also nominated in the categories Leading Urban Getaway Destination in Mexico 2020 (Mexico’s Leading City Break Destination 2020), Leading Destination in Mexico 2020 (Mexico’s Leading Destination 2020) and in the Leading Destination Destination in Adventure Tourism in Mexico 2020 (Mexico’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination 2020).

The capital city featured cities such as Hoi An (Vietnam), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Florence (Italy), Kyoto (Japan), Udaipur (India), Luang Prabang (Laos), Ubud (Indonesia), Jaipur (India), Krakow (Poland), Mexican destinations such as San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City, among other cities in all regions of the world.

In total, this year Mexico received 20 recognitions of the 37 that were launched and it was the
Caribbean destinations that were positioned among the favorites, with four award destinations, led by Tulum, which was chosen as the best beach destination in Central America.

This world award was received within the framework of the 27th anniversary of the World Travel Awards brand, known worldwide as the main seal of tourism excellence; created to recognize and reward excellence in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry; and adds to the recent recognition by Travel + Leisure magazine as the best tourist city in the world.

Due to the global health contingency, this year the global brand World Travel Awards did not hold the traditional award ceremony, and instead, the Latin America Winners Day celebrated virtually was held, in which the winning destinations from Latin America.
