291

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued an alert for the Baja California peninsula on September 16, 2025, due to the effects of Tropical Storm Mario. The phenomenon, located off the west coast, will bring intense rains, wind gusts, and waves up to three meters high, posing a risk to the population and maritime navigation.

According to the forecast, Baja California Sur will experience very heavy rainfall of between 50 and 75 millimeters, while Baja California will experience heavy rainfall of 25 to 50 millimeters. This rainfall will be accompanied by lightning and possible hail.

The SMN warned that accumulated water could reduce visibility on roads, raise the level of rivers and streams, and cause puddles, landslides, and flooding. In Mulegé, Baja California Sur, 67 millimeters of rain were reported in the last 24 hours, reflecting soil saturation and increasing the risk of further landslides.
Strong Winds on the Peninsula

Mario will also bring wind gusts of between 30 and 50 kilometers per hour to various areas of Baja California and Baja California Sur, as well as the northern Gulf of California. These conditions could cause trees and billboards to fall, affecting urban infrastructure and posing a risk to the population.

High Waves on Coasts

The storm’s maritime impact is another major threat. Waves of between 2 and 3 meters are expected on the western coast of both states, compromising the safety of boats and fishing and recreational activities. Authorities have recommended extreme caution and avoiding areas with high waves.

Temperature Contrasts

The Baja California Peninsula will experience marked temperature contrasts. In Baja California Sur, warm to hot temperatures are expected, potentially exceeding 35°C, while northeastern Baja California will reach highs of 40 to 45°C.

In contrast, the northern mountains of Baja California will record lows between 0 and 5°C, creating a cold environment in the morning and a drastic change to very hot conditions later in the day.

Call to the Public

The regional forecast indicates partly cloudy to cloudy skies throughout the day, with heavy rains and strong winds in the afternoon. Given this situation, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) urged the public to stay informed through official channels and to follow Civil Protection’s instructions to reduce risks.

The agency reiterated that the most up-to-date details can be found on its official website and noted that the storm’s progress will continue to be monitored continuously.
