In a move to shed light on one of the world’s most ecologically rich regions, French cruise line Ponant has announced its intention to take passengers to Mexico’s breathtaking Baja California Peninsula in winter 2027. The voyage is aptly named “Exploration in the Heart of Baja California” and promises to provide an immersive experience into the natural wonders of this vast peninsula.
During the first three months of 2027, Ponant’s sleek 430-foot ship Le Bellot will embark on four round-trip journeys around the famous peninsula. Each expedition will accommodate up to 184 discerning travelers in one of its 92 stylish staterooms or suites, all featuring private balconies or terraces that offer breathtaking views.
Developed over three years with input from local communities, the meticulously curated itinerary is designed to showcase the region’s unique charm and natural beauty. Passengers can expect thrilling encounters with marine animals such as gray whales, blue whales, humpback whales, and bottlenose dolphins in the UNESCO-designated Gulf of California. Additionally, shore landings will allow travelers to explore picturesque coastal towns like Loreto.
According to Samuel Chamberlain, CEO of Ponant Explorations Group, the new Baja California itinerary is built on a foundation of respect for both the environment and local communities who contributed to its development. “From awe-inspiring wildlife encounters with whales and sea lions to the rugged beauty of desert canyons and the charm of small coastal towns, our new Baja California itinerary offers an unforgettable experience shaped by a deep understanding and appreciation for this incredible region,” Chamberlain said.
One of the voyages will be operated in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys, a frequent collaborator of Ponant. Departing on February 10, 2027, this trip features an onboard lecture series that provides insightful commentary into the region’s history, culture, environment, and wildlife. Two expert guides from Smithsonian Journeys will be available to answer passengers’ questions and offer valuable insights about each destination.
The itinerary is designed to cater to both leisure and adventure travelers, with optional activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and canyon hiking. Each port of call also offers a curated excursion or activity, allowing passengers to immerse themselves in the local culture and natural surroundings. Ponant promises an unparalleled “high-impact whale experience” that is not offered by any other cruise line.
Given its proximity to the United States, Ponant’s new Baja California itinerary presents an excellent opportunity for stateside travelers seeking a quick and easy escape.
The departure dates for the 2027 Baja California expedition are January 31, February 10, February 20, and March 2. For further information, interested parties can contact Ponant directly.
