Maribel Ofelia Gómez Trejo, sister of Tania Félix “N,” a former PRI alternate candidate who was arrested last year for alleged ties to a cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was murdered in an armed attack in the Alseseca neighborhood, south of Puebla.

The crime occurred early Monday morning, May 26, in front of the subdivision where she lived, at the intersection of 30 Sur Street and 41 Oriente Street, at around 12:13 a.m.

Witnesses told local media that the victim was intercepted as she was returning home in a Nissan vehicle with license plate TNX-360-B. A man traveling on a motorcycle was reportedly waiting for her. As soon as the victim stopped her vehicle, the assailant approached and fired at least eight shots, three of which were reportedly fatal.

Neighbors notified emergency services. Paramedics from the Advanced Medical Emergency System (SUMA) arrived at the scene and confirmed that the woman was no longer showing vital signs.

The area was cordoned off by members of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), and the Puebla State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) initiated judicial proceedings. Forensic personnel collected ballistic evidence and analyzed the vehicle to look for fingerprints or other traces that could lead to the identification of the perpetrator, who has not yet been arrested.

The political and criminal nexus that amplifies the case

The victim was the sister of Tania Félix, a former PRI alternate candidate for a multi-member congressional seat in Puebla. She was arrested on May 4, 2024, by members of the Mexican Navy and charged with carrying firearms for the exclusive use of the Army, possession of illicit substances, criminal association, bribery, and corruption.

According to investigations, Tania Félix allegedly had ties to the CJNG’s Operativa Barredora criminal cell. This criminal organization was identified by the Puebla Federal Executive Branch (FGE) as responsible for the discovery of seven bodies, six of them decapitated and one dismembered, abandoned in a vehicle on the Periférico Ecológico highway in April 2024.

In addition to her connection to this criminal cell, Tania is believed to be the romantic partner of Juan N., alias “El Apá” or “El Moreno,” identified by the FGE as the leader of Operation Sweeper. It should be noted that there are photographs and videos in which the two appear together. Federal authorities indicated that the operation in which she was arrested was actually intended to capture “El Apá,” but he was not present at the property during the search.

Tania was arrested in the Tres Cruces neighborhood, along with six men—one of them a minor. Five pistols, a long gun, a grenade, a signal jammer, cash, and vehicles that were later reported stolen were found at the scene. During the arrest, the group attempted to bribe the officers with 50,000 pesos in cash. The building where the operation took place also showed blood stains and various forensic evidence demonstrating that crimes were committed there.

PRI Family

Maribel Ofelia Gómez Trejo was also politically active. Until 2018, she worked as head of the General Services Section at Liconsa and, more recently, she served as technical secretary of the PRI Municipal Steering Committee in Puebla City. She was an active party member.

Tania Félix’s political connections have drawn attention both for her party ties and for her criminal entourage. Over more than 15 years within the PRI, she held positions such as specialized coordinator at the Municipal Youth Institute—under the administration of Eduardo Rivera Pérez, the current gubernatorial candidate—an assistant at the National Organization of PRI Women, and a member of the Municipal Council of Tlahuapan, her home municipality.

On her social media, Tania Félix projected an image of luxury and power. She constantly posted images of her national and international trips—to Cancún, Querétaro, Acapulco, Colombia, and Ecuador—and her access to VIP areas at concerts, use of helicopters, stays in exclusive hotels, and private air travel.

She was also frequently seen participating in high-profile political events, rubbing shoulders with figures such as former President Enrique Peña Nieto, Xóchitl Gálvez, Alejandro Moreno, Alejandra del Moral, Enrique de la Madrid, Pepe Chedraui, and Eduardo Rivera himself.

PRI requests no speculation

Vice Admiral Francisco Sánchez González, head of the State Public Security Secretariat, confirmed in a press conference the relationship between the victim and Tania Trejo, and stated that the crime is being investigated from several possible angles.

Meanwhile, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) issued an official statement following the murder of Maribel Gómez Trejo, through its leader in Puebla and senator, Néstor Camarillo Medina. During a press conference, the PRI leader lamented the crime and warned that it should not be politicized, as it was, he said, a femicide that must be solved according to the law.

The leader acknowledged that Maribel had some ties to the PRI, but stressed that her death cannot be used politically by any actor, and demanded that the investigation be conducted in accordance with the law.

He also reiterated the need to follow the appropriate legal channels in the case of Tania Félix “N,” the victim’s sister.
