A group representing pharmacy owners also asked not to buy hand sanitizer gel on the street, as vendors were filling bottles.

A group representing Mexican pharmacy owners said Monday that they have received reports of people picking up used mouth masks from the trash and reselling them.

In other Latin American countries, there have also been reports of this practice because unlicensed merchants often sell them loose on the street.

Masks have become popular items during the coronavirus pandemic, and in some cities, they are required to be worn in public spaces.Ā There have been reports of shortages and price increases.

The National Union of Pharmacy Entrepreneurs (UNEFARM) advised Mexicans to cut their face masks to pieces before throwing them away.Ā Sharing or reusing them presents an infection risk.

Another industry group asked not to buy hand sanitizer gel on the street, saying that sellers were filling brand-name bottles with gels that may not contain 70 percent alcohol, the level considered effective against the virus.
